The mid-to-late 80s was a fantastic time to own a Countach, we were young & fearless and so we enjoyed the cars the way their creator intended. Oh the stories, I could tell, some of which I cannot post here! Anyway, I really think ownership in that period provided me with an appreciation for what the cars can do and how they can be used, and overall it gave me a perspective that seems to be different from that which I encounter amongst most owners today, and for this I'm very grateful.

It was indeed one of the famed Supercar Test Days organized by Mike Pullen and Carrera Sport, back in those days there weren't many rules, no scrutineering of the cars to speak of (or that I can remember!), you simply showed up with a car with gas in it and a helmet.

By the way I'm indebted to Marc Sayce for taking these images, a nice recording of a special time.

Indeed hats off to Lord March, he's done a wonderful job and today it's a beautiful track, I'd love to drive it again, this time in GLA12997.

You are right, it was pretty scary back then as the track was quite bumpy so anywhere near the limit you were always guessing, and there were often anxious moments when encountering much slower cars, you had to be sure they saw you coming, which is exactly why I chose to have my headlights up, below I'm WOT coming out of the chicane and on to the start-finish straight before Madgwick.

Being a child of the 80's and to compliment the QV for that authentic 80's look, one must have the right type of telecommunications device. No self respecting city boy / trader would be without . . Their Motorola Brick phone. . . . This is an original on Pac Tel Cellular. For you Americans who remember this network? Of course, over this side of the pond it's mobile and not cell phone,

When I park up madam, I'll leave this on the dashboard along with a small clear packet of white powder and a roll of banknotes!

FLA12820 restoration details - headliner. You can imagine what an incredibly difficult task it is to locate the exact headliner material in a Countach. The original is on the left, the new material on the right. Though it may be a bit difficult to tell, they are exactly the same, though the original is worn from smoking, time and elements. When the process for replacing the headliner material began, I was amazed what the so called “authorities” and “best in the world” suppliers sent us as our options to choose from. The choices weren’t even close. Even the “experts” can be a bit lazy. But, like with most things, if you dig much harder and ask the right questions, you usually get results. We ran into the same frustrations with the leather and carpet. Needless to say, we’re focusing on every single detail.

Bravo on this, as always, amazing attention to detail from you which will manifest itself in the end result, your passion underscores the adulation these cars are receiving and is mirrored in what I am seeing in our market.

The factory's choice of headliner fabric was something that always intrigued me, as they used a material that was particularly delicate to moisture and oils. This meant the adhesive material had to be applied sparingly and as a result the headliner in some original cars ends up sagging. Then there was the dark spot from hair-gel which is a thing and I've seen it in almost every Countach.

I think the factory's logic was, while getting quality fabric can be expensive, it's equivalent in leather will always cost more, and it's usually cheaper to repair or replace fabric upholstery when it's damaged than it would if it were leather. IMO they should simply have used the even cheaper off-white perforated vinyl like Ferrari and Porsche did, it lasts forever, can be cleaned, and the white shade reflects downwards into the cockpit making it seem lighter and thus bigger.

By the way, I think some specialists are a bit lazy because the factory itself was in the beginning, there are various different headliner fabric materials used throughout the variant range from LP400 to QV, and in fact there are fabric variances even within a particular model variant. If one supplier was short, they got something similar from elsewhere. No big deal, after all, who's looking up there?

In my unique instance, the Mimran Downdraft's cockpit is completely ensconced in leather, appointed with a leather headliner as it is, something of a luxe appointment which the factory eventually adopted a few years later in all production 25ths.

Agreed, I wish they had chosen a much more benign material, as you suggested. Trust me, it would have saved me over a year of hard work in research, hunting, and ultimately commissioning a special run of material. Nonetheless, everything has to be correct, down to the stitch, so I don't regret it.

Thanks Joe, I'm doing my best. 2000 cars is a lot of work to keep track of them all, but it's beginning to look impressive! Here's a nice picture I took of JLA12351 a few years ago in Bella Italia...a car that has been on this thread many times, mostly posted by you to keep the thread alive and interesting. Good work Joe, also appreciated..Ciao! Marcel www.countach-register.com

So we have another challenge, the QV RHD in Hong Kong is probably not GLA12031? The Foster car was always in Australia?

Awesome, the number of one-owner Downdrafts which are still regularly in use some of which have huge miles speaks to how special and reliable they are.

Yes that car came with Bianco wheels.

By the way I think there may be 2 red Downdrafts in AUS spec in Hong Kong, I will find out more soon and share with you.

Great story Joe. That Countach QV of Stephane Ratel is interesting. Not 100% confirmed, but I think that car is HLA12079. Imported into The Netherlands in 1988 from Oman. With small safety bumpers and that extra light in the engine lid. Sold to France. Bought by Stepane I think. Here it is in the Paddock of Circuit Zandvoort, where our Max Verstappen was scheduled to race for his home fans last year....

When Stephane had a red Downdraft circa 1989 - 1992 his car was 100% Euro body and had Munich registration, FYI.

Of course now he has GLA12909.

Yes, pictures of one with silver rims and one with golden rims. Both early RHD DD, I think the same car, but future will tell..
