Lamborghini Urus Allegedly Has Performance Version On the Way

May 13, 2019

Details about the speedy Urus are still scant at the moment.

A high-performance Lamborghini Urus is allegedly under development, according to Motor Trend's Jonny Lieberman citing a well-placed source within the automaker. Lieberman estimates the meaner variant to arrive in about two years.

Unfortunately, the person speaking with Lieberman offered no other details about the more powerful Urus. For reference, the current model makes 641 horsepower (478 kilowatts) and 627 pound-feet (850 Newton-meters) from a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 and running through an eight-speed automatic.

The Urus shares its underpinnings with the Bentley Bentayga and Porsche Cayenne, and a more powerful version of the Lamborghini makes sense because speedier versions of its siblings are either already available or coming soon. The Bentley Bentayga Speed packs a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12 making 626 hp (467 kW) and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm). Porsche Turbo S E-Hybrid Cayenne is on the horizon with at least 677 hp (505 kW) and 626 lb-ft (849 Nm).

The recipe for creating a high-performance Urus seems fairly obvious. On the outside, expect a front end with larger intakes and broader fenders that would allow for fitting larger tires. A bigger diffuser would surround more prominent exhaust outlets. On the inside, expect sport seats with hefty bolsters, lots of carbon fiber, and Alcantara upholstery accents.

We would expect the speedy Urus to continue to pack the twin-turbo V8. Increasing the boost from the turbos would be the most direct way to improve the engine's output.

Before the hotter Urus arrives, a greener version is on the way. Lamborghini’s chief technical officer Maurizio Reggiani says the plug-in hybrid variant should arrive in late 2019 or early 2020. The model reportedly uses a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with an electric motor to produce 680 hp (507 kW) and 626 lb-ft (850 Nm).
